Anawilundawa wetland is a sanctuary administered by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lanka and it has been declared a Ramsar site in 1971, one of the first three Ramsar wetlands declared. It situates in between Chilaw and Puttalam in Arachchikattuwa Divisional Secretariat Division, North Western province. It covers an area of1397 hectares. The forest wetland of mangrove and freshwater swamps, the coasts saltwater and freshwater lakes are three main ecosystems encountered the wetland sanctuary. It is a habitat for many native and migrant avifaunal species as well for mammals, dragonflies, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians and fishes. The sanctuary is best visited between October and April for rare and migratory birds that visit the area.
