Maria is assisting her sister, Bashira, 18, who operates a school for 23 students. Bashira's earnings, the equivalent of US $5-$10 per month, support their entire family. (Their father was killed by a rocket shell in 1993.) Maria also attends a recently opened non-formal educational centre for adolescent and other young women who previously could not attend school. Both Bashira's home-based school and the educational centre are part of a network of UNICEF-assisted schools run by the General Work and Development Association (GWA), a local NGO. UNICEF provides textbooks and other school supplies to home-based schools and, in some cases, also assists with teacher salaries.
