Maria, behind in her own studies, takes literacy and embroidery classes at a recently opened non-formal educational centre for adolescent and other young women who previously could not attend school. She also helps her sister, Bashira, who operates a home-based school, part of a network of UNICEF-assisted schools run by the General Work and Development Association (GWA), a local NGO. Bashira's earnings, the equivalent of US $5-$10 per month, support their entire family.
