  • Description:  Girls study in a temporary tent at Shaheed Mutahary Girls High School soon after the destruction of school by a massive earthquake. An earthquake destroyed thousands of houses in and around Bam city and killed over 30,000 people in December 2003. UNICEF provided the school three large tent for usinge as classrooms. One of the teachers commented, “Now that there are safe classes and many students have returned to school so eagerly, we do not have sufficient teachers. Out of 38 teachers, 10 died and many are injured. Only 7 teachers have reported back to school. Most of the textbooks have also been destroyed in earthquake. We do not know how to move on.”There were almost 40 girls in the classroom, yet absolutely none had anything either to write on or read from. Iran. January 31, 2004.
