Thousands of people in the coastal area took shelter on the embankment and buildings nearby after five to seven feet high tidal surge flooded their homes, during hurricane Aila. The cyclone struck the coastal areas of Bangladesh on May 25, 2009 causing severe damage to crops, homes and lives. About 200 people died and more than thousand are missing. Nearly 200,000 people are still trapped in water. More than 500 shrimp farms washed away in five to seven feet high tidal surge.
