Every year Mangpoo produces about 200,000 kg of cinchona bark. Cinchona bark is the source of antimalarial compound quinine and the antiarrhythmic quinidine, a substance for curing malarial and some other types of fever. There are several large constructions going on in the Mangpoo area on both sides of the road where cinchona plants are dying before the quinine extraction. Cinchona is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. Originally a South American plant, cinchona was brought to India by the British colonizers. India's only quinine-making unit Government quinine factory at Mungpoo was Established in 1874, much before Indiaâs Independence, and the factory has been shut since 2001.
