  • Description:  Women collect water from a hand pump painted red to indicate that it’s water is heavily contaminated with arsenic. Although this water is not supposed to be use for drinking or cooking, people often have little choice. In many cases, 100% of entire village water supply is contaminated. Water from tube wells or hand pumps, previously considered one of the best source of ‘safe’ drinking water, are now pumping invisible, taste less and odorless poison..To identify arsenic contaminated tube wells/hand pumps; most of them are tested. One that are found contaminated are painted red, marking them to be unsafe to be used for drinking purposes and one still clean are painted green to be identified as safe for drinking purposes. In reality however, if a particular area is found contaminated, most hand pumps are also contaminated and not having access to clean drinking water, people are forced to drink contaminated water, only knowingly, from red hand pumps.
