  • Title:  Jute: The golden fibre of Bangladesh
  • Description:  Eighty percent of the world's high quality jute grows in Bangladesh. Jute plant, the fiber of which is known as the golden fiber of Bangladesh, grows six to ten feet in height. It takes two to three months for the plants to grow up for harvest. After cutting, the plants are tied up in bundles and kept under water for a few weeks. When the stems rot and their bark become loose, farmers pull off the fiber from the bark and wash very carefully. Then the fiber is dried in the sun and put in bundles for sale. Jute grows well in moist and swampy lands. Bangladesh has plenty of low lands that go under water during rainy season. Jute is used for making cloth, shawl, ropes, carpet, bags and many other useful things. Jute sacks are very suitable for packing food grains. May 7, 2005.
