Description:
The blue painted entrance of a residence in the blue-painted city of Chefchaouen, originally known as Chaouen, meaning 'peaks'. Moulay Ali Ben Rashid founded Chaouen in 1471 as a base for Riffian Berber tribes to launch attacks on the Portuguese in Ceuta. Apparently, Jews escaping the Spanish inquisition started the blue colour though today, the blue is said to symbolize the sky and heaven, and serve as a reminder to lead a spiritual life.
