Title:
Jamuna Saud, carrying a bag of rice and some green leafy vegetables,
Description:
Carrying a bag of rice and some green leafy vegetables, Jamuna Saud (29), returns home after full day of work in the field in Biraltoli, a village about four kilometers away from Mangalsen, the capital town of Achham District in Far-Western Region of Nepal.
Jamuna has five children between ages of 12 and 2 years. Her husband fell from a tree and died about 18 months ago, and now she is the sole provider for the entire family. Looking at her children, itâs easily to tell they do not get enough to eat. All of them look severely malnourished.
Roop (12), her oldest child, roams around, perhaps help look after younger sibling when Jamuna is away. However, itâs quite obvious that Dhana (10), Jamunaâs oldest daughter, works much harder, and due to excessive domestic responsibilities and farm work, she cannot go to school. Durga (7), like her other siblings, look very malnourished. Doodh Kali, 4 years old, continues to suck her thumbs and looks weak and malnourished. Nirmila, although two years old, continue to be breastfed, most likely due to lack of actual meal. She also suffers from visible infections.
Jamuna and her childrenâs suffering is so obvious through their malnourished faces and weak bodies, it is heart breaking. If society does not provide some kind of support that makes it possible for Jamuna to raise her children properly, this story will not have a happy ending, and her children will be one paying price, perhaps with their lives. happy, happiness, smiles, smiling
