  • Title:  Migrants in Malaysia's tea estates
  • Description:  Bharat Tea Estate, Cameron Highland, Malaysia: Mohammad Sumon (right) of age 26 years is from Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh. Sumon is now back in Bangladesh. He left Malaysia on the 12th of January 2017. Sumon initially arrived at Bharat Tea estate on a 2 years contract, but was forced to stay for another year. "They refused to return my passport and forced me to stay for another year. I was helpless, I couldn't do anything about it." "They make you toil on the field all day and they pay you peanuts for it. There are so many Bangla people who work in other places for up to 10 years or more but here nobody wants to work more than 2-3 years. Everybody runs away as soon as their contract is over." "We earn about 1000 MYR/month, of which each month they deduct 100 MYR for the machine, 25 MYR for oil, 20 MYR grease, 150 MYR for something else and then we spend about 400 MYR on ration; so by the end of it we are left with no money to send home. So whats the point of living and working here." "I just want to go back home and work in Bangladesh. At least I will be close to my family."
