Description:
A girl writes on a blackboard in an open air classroom at the government run Pul-e-Rangeena Primary School for girls, in the northwestern city of Herat, Afghanistan. May 6, 2009. Like many other schools in Afghanistan this school too is overcrowded with children returning after many years of conflict. Around 9000 children attend this school in three shifts making it difficult for the school management to house all the children in proper classrooms. The main building has only 20 classrooms and even after setting up 43 tents in the school premises, hundreds of children have to attend classes in the open.
