Description:
Amman temple is one of the oldest Indian temples at Taiping, Perak state. Every Tuesday at 4.30pm, about 40 Indian women will gather at the temple for a special puja to Durga, praying for safety and good luck. Taiping was a tin-mining town that prospered before Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. In 1871, the town was torn apart by violent wars between different Chinese secret societies over the distribution of tin resources. A truce was finally declared in 1874 and Taiping was given her name, which means "everlasting peace" in Chinese. Today, Taiping is bypassed by the North-South Highway that runs along the west coast of Malaysia and is aging gracefully.
