Description:
On 26 March 2003 in Afghanistan, Karima serves three of her six children a meal of lentils and bread for lunch, seated on blankets outside their home in Gardez, capital of the southern province of Paktia, some 120 km south of Kabul, the capital. Her youngest, a baby, sleeps nearby in the shade of a blanket. Karima's family is ethnic Tajik from Kabul. They have lived in a predominantly Pashtun community in Gardez for almost three years, since her husband's auto-repair shop in the capital was looted. He now works as a cook. Karima worries that her children will have to leave school to help support the family. She would like to return to Kabul one day. "You see how we have to live for now," she remarked. "It will take a long time for us to leave this place."
