Description:
An exclusive image of Water Festival of the ethnic Rakhain community in Bandarban. The event is a part of their New Year celebration. It begins with Rakhain girls throwing water at each other at the festival spot. Then, as Rakhain boys come across from different places with music and dance, girls throw water to the boys of their likings. Rakhains of all ages take part in this, as this is their main religious and social festival. The image was taken by Rashid Talukdar in the 70s with special permission from the Rakhain King, as it was not allowed to take any image of the festival before the peace accord between the government of Bangladesh and the tribal communities was signed. Bandarban, Bangladesh. 1970s.
