Description:
Minhaz Haque (15 years old) collects salvageable materials from his destroyed house few meters away. There is nothing left of his house. Not even foundation. He said, Its like there was no house here ever..On the day tsunami stuck his village, it was Sunday, thus schools were close. He was fixing ceramic tiles on roof of a house in the neighbourhood when he saw water coming. He came down from the roof to try to run away, but water rose too quickly and he was forced to go back up on the roof. He saw how powerful it was and how it was destroying everything. After a while, even the house he was on collapsed and he fell down in the water. He caught a coconut tree and climbed up, but even that came down. He saw a fridge floating by and he climbed on top of it, but that too skunked. Finally he managed to find another building that had survived so far and took shelter on the roof. He saw dead bodies floating by and worried whether his family survived. When water went away, he came down and went to see his house. There was nothing there. He heard that his father has been injured and taken to the hospital. He went to the hospital and found his father amongst hundreds of other injured people..He has three brothers and two sisters. Somehow every one including his mother has survived, but the have nowhere to go and no place to live. They have currently taken shelter in a relief camp. Many of his friends are missing..Maruthamunai village. Ampara District. Eastern Sri Lanka.
