  • Description:  Prashand (10 years old) tells his story and cries remembering it. Thotagamuwa village near Hikkaduwa, a popular tourist town in Southern Sri Lanka..He stated, “I went to market to buy some fish and vegetables with my mother. We were walking on the side of the road (Galle Road from Colombo to Galle). Traffic was unusually heavy. I thought there must be an accident on the road ahead. Suddenly there was a big panic. Everyone was shouting and running. We also got frighten and started running back towards home, but it was too late. As soon as we turned, we got hit by a huge wave and sank. I was in the water for a long time and could not come out. I thought I was dying. I was still under water when my mother grabbed me and pull me out. I don’t how long we in the water. We kept rolling. It was like diving in the sea, only water was far more stronger..After a while we were slammed on the railway station building and managed to come out. As soon as we hit the land, we started running towards home (about 1 km from station). There was destruction everywhere. In just few minutes our world had changed. We looked for my sisters and my father, but we didn’t find anyone at home..We quickly started running away from home and sea towards the temple (about 1/2 km away). Once inside the temple, I climbed up on a the Buddha tree and wrapped to it like a bat (I forgot the name on the tree. It is usually very old and large with roots hanging from branches and considered sacred in Asia. See photo Story B-05-DSC_0640.jpg). Including little children, there must have been over 100 people on the tree and even more on stupas. Water kept coming and everything was submerged. I was very scared. Hundreds of people died..We came back to see our house three days later. It was like a desert. Everything was grounded. My house is damaged. All my friends are gone. Even my bicycle is damaged. We are now trying to make remains of our house livable.”
