Julio Etchart grew up in Uruguay and later settled in the UK where he studied Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at Newport Art College in Wales and video production at the Theatre Workshop in Edinburgh, Scotland.
He has covered national and world events for the British and international press and has also worked as consultant and researcher for recording labels, film and TV companies.
He regularly takes commissions from charities and NGOs like Save the Children, OXFAM, UNICEF, War on Want and the British Council, to create audio-visual material and portable displays for their reports and campaigns.
After being awarded a World Press Photo First Prize for his documentation of environmental issues, he produced ‘The Four Elements’, a touring exhibition on global ecological issues, sponsored by the European Union, a project that he has been regularly updating.
Julio has five photo books published and has exhibited his work in many venues around the world. He also writes reviews of exhibitions and art shows for online publications.
He has also been involved in the practice of photo-voice and has facilitated workshops in participatory image-making with grassroots communities in many countries in the majority world.
Julio has recently come back from a spell of two years working at the Faculty of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore, where he shot and co-produced multi-media documentaries on regional migration issues for educational and mass media campaigns.
