Description : Seated on a carpet, his hand crutches nearby, 12-year-old Abdul Malik puts on his prosthesis at home in Kabul, the capital. Abdul lost his right leg in a landmine explosion when he was seven. The landmine also killed his nine-year old brother, Mohammad Alam Khan, who brought it home thinking it a toy. The mine exploded while they were playing with it. Abdul, who has four other siblings, does not go to school. His father and an older brother are unemployed, but look for odd jobs every day. Abdul recalls the accident clearly: "It was very painful. When the doctor told my parents they would have to cut off my leg, all they could do was cry. There was nothing anyone could do.... Six months after the operation, ICRC [the International Committee of the Red Cross] made me an artificial leg. It is so good that sometimes I forget that that leg is artificial." Afghanistan.
