Description : The Ōura Cathedral, also known as the Basilica of the Twenty-Six Holy Martyrs of Japan was built in 1864. It is the oldest wooden church of Gothic architecture and was constructed in memory of the twenty-six Christians martyred in Nagasaki in 1597. It was designated a National Treasure in 1933 and is recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region." The cathedral gained historical significance in 1865 when Japanese Christians, who had secretly maintained their faith for centuries, revealed themselves to the French priest Father Petitjean.
