Fariba, 17, partially covers her face with her scarf. She is taking classes at an educational centre known as General Work and Development Association (GWA), a local NGO. The Association offers a non-formal education programme for adolescent and other women who previously could not attend school, offering classes in basic writing and literacy, as well as vocational training in carpet-weaving, sewing, tailoring, embroidery and other skills. The youngest of six siblings, first joined school when Taliban were still in power. She was very afraid to come to school but thought she had to take the risk for the sake of a brighter future.. Her father died soon after her birth and her mother supports the family through odd jobs. (Two of her three brothers disappeared after going to Russia in search of work, and the third is unemployed.)
