Description:
A woman and a child walk over a makeshift bamboo bridge to reach their home at the slum built directly over a puddle of chemical waste from nearby tanneries. It stinks and attracts mosquitoes and other insects day and night. Even though living condition in this slum is extremely difficult and hard to tolerate, a tiny room in the slum still cost about Taka one thousand, about $ 15 per month. Like many other industries unconcerned about the environmental factors, tanneries also cause serious damage to the environment. Hazaribagh, Dhakas biggest leather processing zone, is right in the middle of one of the most densely populated residential areas. February 20, 2007.
