- Description: Maria, a 12 year old girl from a poor Afghan family, collects drinking water from a public hand pump, the only source of drinking water in this part of Qalaai Mirabaas neighborhood in Kabul, the capital. They get about 50 Afgs, worth one US dollar, for one weeks work. Her father left them and her mother cannot afford her schooling. She helps her mother at home and in the afternoon, scavenges for cooking fuel. At Aschiana, she attends art classes, plays basketball and receives an afternoon meal. This NGO serves children who live or work on the streets, in the Shash Darak neighborhood of Kabul, Afghanistan. July 12, 2007.
