The Japanese temple, also known as the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple is a two-storied white building built in a traditional Japanese style founded by Fujii Guruji in the year 1972 as Buddhist order for world peace. Fujii Guruji was a close associate of 'Father of the Nation' Mahatma Gandhi and had seen the tragedy of the atom bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. He was heavily influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's commitment to non-violence. The title of 'Guruji' was given to him by Mahatma Gandhi. Close to the temple is the Peace Pagoda, known as Shanti Stupas, which showcases four avatars of Lord Buddha that radiate peace and non-violence. The foundation stone of the Peace Pagoda was laid on November 3, 1972, by Nichidatsu Fujii. Darjeeling, West Bengal, India.
