Description:
Aqila, 8, leads her 18 month old brother, Abdul Wahid, down the hill, towards other children who are playing in the village of Ragshad, in the central Bamyan Province. Their father works as a daily laborer and the seven children of the family must work up to eight hours a day weaving carpets besides attending school. It takes two months for the family to make a 5 square-meter carpet, worth 800 Afghans, about US $24. The house has no running water or gas, so the older boys walk two hours every day to collect water from a local stream and firewood from the mountains. Ragshad, Bamyan province, Afghanistan. July 7, 2007.
