Description:
The police pound in Dhakas Agargaon area contains hundreds of confiscated rickshaws and motor vehicles. Most of the motor vehicles are returned to the owners after they pay a fine but not the rickshaws. The money required to re-procure a rickshaw is almost enough to buy a new one. In most cases the poor rickshaw-pullers cannot even hope to get their rickshaws back once they are confiscated by the traffic police. According to the Office of Traffic Control, there are 76,000 licensed rickshaws in Dhaka city though the actual figure is above 6,00,000. Bangladesh. June 7, 2009.
