The Sigiriya rock, in Matale district of Sri Lanka. This 370 meter high lava mound of an ancient volcano is famous for the fortified palace complex, built during the reign of King Kasyapa, 477 495 AD. After his death, the place was turned into a Buddhist monetary.The complex is divided into three parts- garden and water tanks, lower palace at the base and the upper palace on top. Brick-built stairway, now damaged in most places, leads to the top. There are frescos covering an area of 140 meters long and 40 meters high on the wall of the rock. It is one of the seven World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka and is also a popular tourist destination. June 28, 2008.
